July 2005
I was unemployed when I wrote the original draft of the PACT America report, but I eventually found work as a welder. While I enjoy fabrication work, the idea of wearing a welding jacket and other protective gear while fusing molten metal together in the hot summer heat quickly lost its appeal. Nevertheless, when my employer began to offer unlimited overtime, I figured that if I was going to do it, I might as well go all out.
June 20 – June 26 = 68.70 Hours Worked
June 27 – July 3 = 79.70 Hours Worked
July 4 – July 10 = 75.90 Hours Worked
I worked every single day for almost five weeks before I was forced to take a break, but I did not do this for my own personal gain. Instead, I used these profits to repay some of the debts I incurred while researching and writing the PACT America report. I also decided to purchase some newspaper advertisements, because I had reached the following conclusion:
In the land of free speech, people will not listen until a price has been paid.
It turns out that advertising is actually quite expensive. After giving it careful consideration, I concluded that advertising was probably a lot like fishing in that people would need to nibble before they would bite. I decided that my first course of action would be to purchase several small teaser ads that would serve as bait. These ads were designed to make people curious, and I figured that if someone was interested enough to visit my website after seeing such an ad, they might actually take the time to read through my material. Once the waters had been tested with a few of these smaller ads, I could then set the hook with an ad large enough to contain detailed, attention grabbing information.
The initial results were not good, and when my overtime started to dry up, I decided it was time to cut bait. These newspaper advertisements were a complete waste of money.
I was willing to pay the price, but it was going to cost me more than just money.
